One of my favorite collections at our sister brand, Juliska, is the ‘Jardins du Mondes’ or Gardens of the World, which I was inspired to design after discovering the extravagant formal par-terre gardens of Alcazar in Spain, Heligan in England, Villandry in France and L'Andana in Italy. Around that time, I was a young wife and mother thinking a lot about how the women I admired seemed to go about their lives with such grace. My lovely English sister in law, Deborah, shared a wonderful quote that has stayed with me ever since. “The grass is not greener on the other side of the fence, no, not at all. The grass is greenest where it is tended. When crossing fences, carry water with you and tend the grass wherever you may be.” This is precisely what the women I admired did - they gardened and nurtured their lives and loved ones with thoughtfulness, grace, optimism, principle, love, balance and consistency.
With tenderness and strength they encouraged little buds and weeded out negative sprouts. I affectionately began thinking of them as La Jardinière - the French word for a female gardener. The women in my family of all ages, from my 91 year old grandmother to my beloved mother, all the way down to my little 10 year old daughter, have served as brilliant role models for me. Through the elements of a garden, from flowers to dew drops, I have designed many pieces named after them symbolically, to reflect the qualities I admire in them. As you peruse the La Jardinière collection, you can read the individual stories about each piece. I hope that some of the stories will resonate with you, as they do with me.
